N’Guigmi’s First Female Vice Mayor

The training helped me develop my skills as an actor in the community. Although I am the youngest member of the local government, I find that the people respect me a lot.
— Aichata Maman Dahabaye of Diffa, Niger

In early 2013, PDev II selected Aichata Maman Dahabaye of Diffa, Niger to take part in PDev II leadership training. Aichata was already active in her community as a member of the municipal council. During the training she learned about the principles of positive leadership, conflict mitigation, youth mobilization, community engagement and identification of conflict and violent extremism risk factors. To enable the participants to mobilize other youth in contributing positively to their communities in a tangible way, Aichata and her peers developed an action plan at the end of the training.

Following the training, the municipal council held elections to nominate new leadership for their locality, N’Guigmi. Despite being the youngest member of the council, Aichata was elected by her peers to become N’Guigmi’s first female Vice Mayor.

While her election was undoubtedly a result of her hard work and dedication to her community, she is also thankful for the PDev II training she received. Aichata is eager to use her role as Vice Mayor to mobilize other youth towards countering violent extremism in N’Guigmi.
